5 Things to Consider When Choosing a Florist
Choosing the right floral designer for your wedding

Modern wedding planning has shifted with the way we are showing up in the world. We are more considerate of the planet, excess waste and unnecessary spending. We are more interested in meaningful and unique experiences and being good to each other. My floral design business ‘Stems By Meredith’ was born out of my desire to collaborate with couples in making their memorable moments beautiful (while being a responsible business in the world today). I work to create with couples to ensure their wedding is special and uniquely theirs.
Here are a few tips from me for choosing a thoughtful wedding floral design that works for you!
1.Keep an open mind and trust your florist!
We’ve all fallen down the rabbit hole of Pinterest and Instagram! Not only can all the choices be overwhelming but these photos tend to be editorial and many times the exact flower featured may not be available due to location or season. Totally keep scrolling for inspiration but keep your eyes peeled for an aesthetic or color scheme that excites you rather than getting too hung up on recreating a specific image. I always love it when couples choose inspiration from my work – there’s a reason you were drawn to work with me in the first place! Try to be open-minded and trust that I can create a floral design that uniquely represents you.
2. You don’t have to sacrifice the things you value to have a beautiful wedding!
Consider doing a little research before choosing your vendors. This way you can connect with businesses that reflect who you are as a couple and the way you want to show up in the world. As someone especially in love with the natural world, it is important that I find ways to create more sustainably by supporting locally grown ingredients and repurposing flowers throughout a wedding. Donating my time and the leftover flowers after an event are a way I connect to my community and give back. I love to collaborate with couples that value these things as well!
3. You don’t have to say no to flowers!
Substituting flowers for candles and greens for is not the only way to make something affordable and sustainable. It is very important to me to help couples curate wedding florals within their budget. There are many wonderful local farmers growing beautiful flowers in the area. You can support these small businesses, and cut the carbon footprint of flying greens in from another part of the world, by taking advantage of what we have available locally. I am always thinking of ways to make your wedding flowers amazing at a price that works for you. You can afford the wedding flowers you want, and without fear of meeting a minimum, we just need to be creative together!
4. Consider your venue!
The right pairing of florals with your venue can set the stage for the experience you create on your wedding day. You don’t need flowers in every corner! I can help guide you to the special moments where your florals will have the most impact- like your bridal bouquet for your portraits or the backdrop for your vows. Also guiding you to floral choices that can be best captured by your photographer! Thoughtfully chosen flowers along the route your guests will take the day of the wedding can also be a wonderful way to connect the different spaces of your venue and make it a more cohesive event.
5. Choose vendors you connect with!
My memories from my wedding were made precious because of the people I worked with! It is super important to me that my couples have a great experience on their wedding day too. You will remember if your photographer put you at ease or if (heaven forbid) your bartender was a jerk! It is very important to me to be calm and kind and take special care when interacting with everyone involved in my couples’ weddings. When choosing vendors, consider their attitude and the way they make you feel just as much as you’d consider the cost.
For me, it is an honor to be trusted by my couples on such an important day in their families’ lives. Creating a memorable, enjoyable experience is equally as important as creating beautiful flowers.
