Devon and Chelsea are one of those couples who feel meant to be. They knew each other in high school but didn’t really connect until they matched on a dating app years later. Their hometown wedding had a lot of sentimental details built into it. The Malcolm Gross Rose Garden in Allentown was the perfect venue for their ceremony. Their whole day struck a great balance between a laid back atmosphere and meaningful details.
The Malcolm Gross Rose Garden is a popular photo destination, and it’s easy to see why. Paths wind through trellises covered in vibrant roses. Reflecting ponds and gazebos create a peaceful atmosphere. It’s easy to feel like you have your own little corner of an enchanted garden for your wedding.
The Malcolm Gross Rose Garden is run by the City of Allentown Department of Parks and Recreation. It operates differently than a private venue. Here are some things to consider if you’d like to have your wedding here.
If you have your ceremony at the Malcolm Gross Rose Garden, plan a little time for portraits. Get there early or stick around after to take advantage of the gorgeous surroundings while you’re in your wedding attire.
Since the rose garden is entirely outdoors, summer is the best time of year to get married here. The roses are at peak bloom in June. Plan around that time frame if you want the most sunshine and bright blossoms.
This wedding venue is in Allentown, a bit over an hour north of Philadelphia. It’s an easy drive for a day trip from the city. It’s an even more laidback experience for locals like Devon and Chelsea.
The Malcolm Gross Rose Garden was a really meaningful wedding venue for Chelsea and Devon. Chelsea’s late mom was named Rose. They wanted to feel like she was with them in some way. The rose garden became a big part of their wedding day.
Growing up, Chelsea and Devon each visited the park separately. They had their own memories. Thanks to their wedding ceremony, they now have shared memories in the park.
Devon’s parents hosted the getting ready and reception afterward. Devon’s mom made her dress! I loved bonding with her over our shared love of sewing. (Ask me about this when we chat! I love talking patterns.)
In general, Devon and Chelsea cared a lot about keeping things local. They even had all local Allentown beers. They wanted to celebrate where they grew up and the memories they shared.
After the ceremony at the Malcolm Gross Rose Garden, everyone headed to Devon’s parents’ house for the reception. Beautiful wildflower bouquets and pretty green glassware decorated the tables on the deck. Strings of lights illuminated the meal.
Instead of having a traditional caterer for their intimate wedding, Chelsea and Devon opted for a private chef. They came to the house and did a full multi-course dinner for everyone. This was such a great way to mark their day with a sense of importance and intention without doing the same old thing. A private chef is such a great option for small gatherings because they do all the cooking and cleaning.
During dinner, Devon and Chelsea’s people gave speeches that got pretty emotional. Since it was such a small gathering, I got to document a lot of candid moments between them and their guests. Cozy side hugs and laughter filled the evening. I felt so lucky to be a part of this deeply personal celebration.
