I get it – your wedding is already costing you an arm and a leg and you figure, “Hey, we are already hiring a photographer for the wedding day. Why bother with an engagement session?”
However, your wedding photos shouldn’t be a trial run. You get one shot at the first look, walk down the aisle, cake cutting, what have you. But when you get engagement photos done first, you’ll know what poses work well for you and your partner, how to feel confident in front of the camera, and it’s a great way to screen your photographer before the big day.
Here’s what I tell my clients when they are trying to decide whether to sign up for an engagement shoot before their big day:
Practice “The Look.” Despite being a photographer, I really don’t get my picture taken very often. But when I recently got some photos done, I realized I have a tendency to tuck my chin in when I laugh. Turns out the camera doesn’t love this angle on me. By getting engagement photos before the wedding day, you might realize some angles make you feel more confident than others and your photographer can give you pointers.
Don’t be a Poser. I’m not a photographer that recycles the same poses for every shoot because every couple has a different look in front of the camera. I like to play around and see what poses work best and are most comfortable for my couples. Then when the wedding day comes, we don’t have to waste time figuring out what works!
Show Your Casual Side. Your wedding day is the fancy version of you, but that’s not the only you. I love when couples go casual for their engagement photos so that they get two entirely different looks between engagement and wedding photos. I suggest going “elevated casual” for engagement photos – only do one or two outfits that are pretty typical of your style, don’t worry about professional hair or makeup, and just keep it really simple and stress-free.
Boost Your Confidence. Seeing how great you look in your engagement photos is only going to add to your excitement for your wedding day. Why not treat yo self and go into your wedding day feeling fabulous?
