I was recently asked if I prefer photographing weddings or families, and I really had to think about it. There are exciting things about both kinds of sessions. But what I loved about Danielle and James’ wedding is that I didn’t have to choose!
This couple’s wedding wasn’t just about the two of them; it included James’ daughter as an integral part of the day. If you are looking for a way to have a blended family wedding, here are some tips from this sweet family:
Two in one. Danielle and James opted to spread their photography session over two days: they got shots of the actual wedding day, and then 4 days later got all dolled up again to get family portraits with their daughter. This made for a great album with two different types of weather, place, and time of day…not to mention that Danielle got to wear her wedding dress more than once! Because they opted for a split session, they could get right to partying at the wedding while still taking the time to get the photos they wanted later that week.
Include kids in the ceremony. Danielle and James’ daughter stood with them at the altar and took part in the ceremony. They also took the time to present her with a necklace, which will be a wonderful reminder for years to come of this special day. Consider ways that your kids can be incorporated into the day’s events so that they know this day is about them, too.
Keep it small. This was a small and intimate wedding, which meant that the happy couple didn’t have to spend all of their time making the rounds. They got to spend some real quality time with their little family during the reception at Death of the Fox Brewery. If you do decide to go big, try to find quiet times throughout the day to make your kids feel special and included.
