With this whole COVID-19 situation, you may have heard of weddings being postponed or couples eloping, with plans to throw a big party once this is all over. 

I’ve also seen some couples opting for a micro wedding, a new(ish) phenomenon in the world of minimalists and those wishing to save a buck without sacrificing the traditions of their dream wedding. 

What constitutes a wedding as micro? Ideally there are 20 or less attendees, a quick (but traditional) ceremony, and either a chill reception or no reception at all. The difference between a micro wedding and an elopement is the traditional aspect of the micro wedding – you still have the dress, the ceremony, the photos, and the cake. But by foregoing a large guest list and party venue, you significantly cut down on cost. And because of the smaller guest list, it is easier to plan the wedding on a weekday (even more savings!). 

Here are some perks of the micro wedding trend: 

You get more quality time with your guests. 

So many couples are so emotionally spent on their wedding day because of the number of people they need to engage with on their big day. By limiting the guest list, you get to actually have a real, honest to goodness conversation with your guests. Not to mention spend some time with your new partner! 

You have an excuse not to invite so-and-so.

As soon as you post your engagement on Facebook, all of these randos just come out of the woodwork expecting to get an invitation. But having a micro wedding provides a nice excuse for you not to have to invite everyone. By strictly limiting the guest list to only 20 family members and close friends, it is easier to explain why your cousin’s weird new boyfriend isn’t getting an invite. 

You have access to cooler venues. 

By going micro, you will have a lot more options for your wedding location. Many cool, quirky places in the city can’t accommodate a guest list of 100+ people. But 20? Not a problem. Same goes with catering: you can go for the pricier, yet tastier, meal options when you have a smaller guest list.
